When outfitting an RV kitchen–or that of any small apartment–storage space is at a premium. Therefore, everything needs to serve multiple purposes. I also think they need to be durable and inexpensive, in case they break from getting banged around too much. Check out these 5 indispensable RV kitchen appliances and why we can’t live without them.
1. Blender
A blender is a mainstay in our kitchen. It doesn’t leave our counter. So, it’s no surprise that we have a blender that’s completely dedicated to our RV. When looking for a blender for our RV, we needed one that can puree, blend, crush ice, and more. We also needed one that was durable and not too heavy. This Proctor Silex model is great. It has a glass pitcher that completely disassembles for easy cleaning.
We use our blender for smoothies, milkshakes, blended coffee drinks, sauces, and dips. But, our favorite use for our blender is acai bowls. Definitely one of my kids favorite meals–we even travel with a bucket of toppings.
2. Electric Kettle (aka “kum-kum”)
Ok, so this is not an appliance that we really use in our home kitchen. However, we use hot water on such a regular basis that we have an urn running 24/7. But not so practical in a moving vehicle. (In fact, the two things I tell people not to do while in motion are shower–too slippery–and boil water–too dangerous.)
So, we use an electric kettle as one of our RV kitchen appliances. What do we use so much water for? Coffee, hot cocoa, and my kids special treat–noodle soup.
We also use it to boil water when cooking pasta, rice, etc. I like to boil the water in the kettle then pour it into the pot–especially when at high altitudes. This cuts down on cooking time and heat in the RV (since you don’t have to run the stove so long).
3. Sandwich Grill (aka “sandwich maker”)
We recently spent a month in Mexico and brought our sandwich grill with us. Sandwiches can be made quickly and easily. Even young kids can use it (although I’d recommend having someone older take out the actual sandwich). Be creative. Don’t just limit yourself to grilled cheese. Sandwiches make great snacks as well as meals to go.
I did say all my RV kitchen appliances need to play [at least] double duty, what else does my sandwich grill do? We’ve used it with waffle batter, muffin batter, brownie/cake batter, and even reheated noodles and cheese. As you can tell from the picture, ours has seen better days. (If you don’t keep kosher, the possibilities are really endless but ours is dairy.)
4. Slow Cooker
Not just for Shabbos. We use our slow cooker during the week as well. We’ve used our slow cooker in our RV under several different circumstances. I’ve put up a meal to cook while driving (if we’re planning to run the generator anyway). If we’ve left the RV hooked up, then I’ve left a meal to cook while we’re out for the day. More often, though, I’ve cooked dinner overnight while hooked up then just needed to reheat it for dinner the next night.
Of course, we also use it for Shabbos. Ask me how I’ve prepared an entire Shabbos (soup, chicken, kugel, rice, cholent) in one slow cooker while on the road. (Another kosher caveat: our slow cooker is meat.)
5. Corkscrew
Ok Ok Ok. I know, this isn’t an appliance. And no, we don’t own one of those electric corkscrews. However, I wanted to make a list of 5 for you and this corkscrew does do multiple things, is durable, takes up minimal space, and is inexpensive. With this corkscrew, you’ll be ready to easily open a bottle of wine (for Shabbos, of course), soda, or anything else.
There are other appliances that many RVers and Kosher travelers are big fans of. However, some are bulky and some are unnecessary if you have an actual oven, stove, and microwave in your RV kitchen anyway. Also, when taking up cabinet space with meat and dairy pots, I don’t really have “extra” space.
