There is a great deal of family time coming up in the next couple of weeks. Some will spend it with extended family whom they only rarely see; for others, they will be with the same people as always. Here is an amazing personalized game to ensure lasting family memories.
All you need is a few simple supplies:
- small slips of paper
- pen
- dry erase markers
- storage container (for above items)
And, really, all you need is the first two.
Family Pictionary
We are all familiar with the game Pictionary. A quick recap for those that aren’t: one person draws while the other person or group of people guess. The game is generally played in teams–either simultaneously or alternating–and timed. But in this version of Family Pictionary, we usually play as one group with or without a timer. We find this works better since we are a mixed age group and the goal is lasting family memories not competition.
Game creation is relatively simple and straight forward. Write down family memories, experiences, inside jokes, etc. on slips of paper. These are what need to be drawn and guessed. The process itself is an enjoyable walk down memory lane. Anything from the mundane (“another gas station”) to family sayings (“don’t forget to make a Kiddush HaShem”) to running jokes about the places you’ve been (“menchies on the mountain”).
There is no family travel experience necessary for this game. We all have family memories and experiences on which to capitalize. Anything is fair game. It is always surprising what my kids come up with.

Just like your family’s memories and experiences, this game is unique and ever expanding. You can start creating the game yourself or have your kids do so. Either way, once you get started, it can be added to at any time. This activity is perfect for your kids to work on when they need to be “kept busy”, or even when cousins occasionally get together. Consider two versions: immediate and extended family. While they work on it, they will re-live all the positive memories you have created over the years and [re]bond while doing so.
When it’s time to play, we like to play with dry erase markers on a window or mirror. This can work in the living room or even in an RV or hotel room. You could also just use paper and pencil/crayons/markers/etc.
We keep a pen and extra slips of paper in the box together with the game itself so we can always add to it. Admittedly, some of what we come up with does not lend itself to drawing. But, that’s half the fun! When someone inevitably draws something completely ridiculous, not only is it a good laugh but it creates a new memory! You better believe that the next time that saying comes up, there’s a good chance the same ridiculous picture will be drawn. However, this time we all know what it is– or at least what it’s supposed to be.
Family Charades
The creation of Family Charades is the same as that of Family Pictionary. However, you act out the phrases on the paper slips rather than draw them. So, even if you have nothing to draw on or with, you can still reap the benefits of creating lasting family memories. And it can be pretty hysterical.
