When hitting the road with kids, often the greatest concern is for the youngest. Infants can have many needs. They also won’t remember anywhere you take them–so you can focus on activities the older kids (and adults) enjoy. However, they still need to eat, sleep, and bathe. Here are 3 RV hacks for infants.

Eating

If your infant is exclusively nursing, then that is your own great hack! You don’t have to worry about bottles and formula. However, if you’ll need to make a bottle while driving down the road (or pulled over), you don’t want to have to start digging around for everything or opening a bunch of cabinets. You want everything easily accessible.

I used an over-the-door hanging shoe organizer. I had it cut in rows and gromets added to each row (I took it to a local banner making company that charged me 25-cents per gromet). I’ve hung the pieces throughout our RV, for various storage purposes, with command hooks. One row is dedicated to “baby stuff”. The various pockets hold diapers, wipes, bottles, pacifiers, and formula (in a pre-measured formula dispenser). It’ right near the couch for easy diapering, and restocked when convenient. having everything handy makes things so much easier!

If your baby is a bit older, the pockets can hold baby food jars or pouches, spoons, sippy cups, or anything else he may need.

Sleeping

You want your baby to sleep comfortably. But you also want him to sleep safely. There are many people who have remodeled their RVs to include some sort of crib. However, what if you don’t want to go through the hassle? What if it’s just a rental? I promised “no remodeling necessary” RV hacks for infants, right?

We turned the top bunk into a “crib” with a toddler bedrail guard. They come in various sizes, so be sure to measure not just the length but the height as well. You don’t want too much space between the top of the rail and the ceiling since it’s much lower than crib rails (don’t want him to climb out). But, you also don’t want it to be too tall and not fit (or not open if it hits the wall). We like the kind that folds down for easy in and out. Also, the ones with straps that go underneath the mattress don’t have to be screwed or nailed in.

Bathing

Some RV models do have [small] bathtubs. And toddlers can be old enough to stand and be showered with the handheld showerhead. When we needed a baby bath in our RV, we used a collapsible one. The drain hole serves a secondary purpose: we hang the bath on a command hook in the shower when we’re not using it.

The bath can be used on the shower floor, in the living room, outdoors, or really anywhere. It can double as a laundry basket as well and stores very easily.

There are many things that can make RVing with an infant easier, more pleasurable, and more convenient. However, they all need to eat, sleep, and bathe which makes these RV hacks for infants essential!
